It’s all about beer

Did you know that early beer makers left their brews in open vessel exposed to air borne yeast? They didn’t realize that the foam on top of the fermenting brew consisted of millions of yeast cells.

However, they always scooped off the foam to use it as a starter for the next batch. With out realizing it, they were breeding top fermented yeasts. Later a monk took up beer brewing. Benedictine monk carved beer cellar into the rocks beneath the monastery and packed them with ice from frozen rivers and lakes so that beer brewed in the fall could be saved for later use in the summer. Stored in such cold temperatures, the beer became more stable and the yeast sank to the bottom. This was the origin of bottom-fermenting yeasts. Yeast is one of the most important ingredients in brewing and is jealously guarded by brew master, sometimes unsuccessfully. Once the son of a Bavarian brew master and an Austrian friend journeyed to England and, with the aid of a metal tube with a hidden valve, stole yeast samples from the British. As more and more scientific methods were applied to the brewing process, both the quality and types of beer improved. Today there are over 25 different types of beer.

When we think of a toilet, we usually also think of toilet paper. many methods were used before toilet paper was invented. Many regions used leaves , ancient Romans used stick with sponge attached and Americans colonist used corncobs.

In the the 1700′s people realized that the daily newspaper was good for more than just reading, and in the late 1800′s the sears catalog ended up in many out houses. In 1879 the Scott brothers invented toilet paper that consisted of a single square of a very coarse paper similar to crepe paper. It was not until almost thirty years later that toilet paper appeared in rolls of soft, fluffy paper. During the 1970′s the United State experienced shortage of many items, such as gasoline and raisin. Famous talk show host Johnny Carson quipped, “You know whats disappearing from the supermarket shelves? Toilet paper. There’s an acute shortage of toilet paper in the United State.” That did it. The next day many of the 20 million viewers ran to the stores and brought all the toilet paper they could find. By noon, most stores were completely out. Although Carson explained on his next show that it had all been a joke and apologized, people still saw empty shelves in the stores and panicked. Scott Paper Company ran a video showing all their plants in full productions. It didn’t help. It took three weeks before the shelves wee restocked. the shortage was finally over, the only shortage in American history caused by the consumer.
